Donald Trump: America’s Bhasmasura and the lessons of history

Whenever one thinks of Donald Trump, an image from Indian mythology comes to mind: Bhasmasura, the demon who, in his blind obsession with power, ultimately destroyed himself. Trump’s political journey mirrors this myth in chilling ways. Like Bhasmasura, he pursued personal gratification and dominance with little regard for consequences, often at the expense of his own country. Despite being the leader of the world’s most powerful democracy, Trump frequently appeared to inhabit a fools’ paradise, convinced that his impulsive, ego-driven actions served the nation’s best interests, while in reality, they endangered both America and the world.

Trump’s tenure exposed the fragility of American checks and balances. While the United States prides itself on its vibrant democratic institutions, his era revealed how easily these can be tested — and at times subverted — by sheer political bravado. From attacking the judiciary to vilifying the press and questioning the legitimacy of elections, Trump’s actions eroded accountability. Americans themselves openly mocked him as reckless or incompetent, yet institutional constraints often struggled to contain him.

History offers a stark warning. Germany’s Adolf Hitler rose to power through democracy, only to use it as a tool to dismantle democracy itself. The result was catastrophic: his ego-driven ambitions plunged Germany into ruin and dragged the world into war. Trump evokes echoes of this danger — not in scale, but in method. By exploiting democratic authority for personal aggrandizement, undermining institutions, and promoting loyalty over principle, he destabilized the political order he swore to uphold.

Trump’s admiration for authoritarian leaders compounded the threat. While leading a democracy, he consistently lauded dictators who ignored human rights and consolidated power in themselves. His racial biases, exclusionary nationalism, and disregard for global norms made his leadership perilous both domestically and internationally.

Foreign policy under Trump often mirrored this recklessness. Allies were treated as competitors in a personal contest for flattery, and decades of carefully nurtured partnerships were strained when they did not serve his ego. India, for instance, faced diplomatic turbulence despite growing cooperation in technology and security. Trade wars, erratic diplomacy, and impulsive pronouncements undermined America’s global influence.

The environmental and planetary consequences of his decisions were equally alarming. By withdrawing from international climate agreements and questioning scientific expertise, Trump endangered not only national well-being but the global future. His impulsive policies risked irreversible harm, all in service of his self-image rather than collective interest.

In mythic terms, Trump embodies Bhasmasura: a figure blinded by ego, dancing on a stage he risks burning down entirely. Combined with the historical lesson of Hitler, his tenure is a stark reminder of how unchecked democratic power, when wielded recklessly, can imperil both nation and world. For America and the planet, the challenge is clear: ensure that ambition and ego do not eclipse accountability, for the price of failure is nothing less than self-destruction.
